Psychology for Sustainability applies psychological science to environmental issues that arise from human actions disrupting natural systems. Drawing from environmental psychology, ecopsychology, conservation psychology, and related fields, this book offers a comprehensive overview of relevant theory and research in an engaging and accessible style.

This 5th edition has been significantly revised and expanded to incorporate the latest research findings and global ecological, political, and social developments. Special emphasis is placed on environmental justice and collective action for systemic change. With over one-third of the content being entirely new and more than 900 new references, this edition also features a full-color design with over 200 figures, tables, and images. Timely topics covered include climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental equity, Indigenous perspectives, social media impact, and the implications of pandemics like COVID-19. Material from the previous edition has been updated throughout.

The book is divided into four parts comprising twelve chapters:

  • What on Earth Are We Doing: Discusses psychology as a sustainability science, the ecological crisis, its historical roots, and a vision for a sustainable future.
  • Psychology for a Sustainable Future: Covers research methods, theories, and findings essential for understanding and changing unsustainable behaviors.
  • What’s Good for the Planet is Good for Us: Explores the interplay between planetary and human health.
  • Being the Change We Wish to See: Introduces two new chapters on motivating readers to apply their knowledge as agents of change. One focuses on collective action for systemic change, while the other offers a positive psychology perspective on addressing the ecological crisis in a way that enhances well-being and resilience.

Specifically designed for a standard college semester, Psychology for Sustainability is essential reading for sustainability courses across various disciplines. It is also valuable for professionals outside academia such as policymakers, legislators, and community sustainability practitioners. Additionally, the book is complemented by online resources for instructors.
